Holistic Parenting: A Healthy Child is a Happy Child.

When it comes to protecting your child, how far would you go?

Last February 23, we were invited to Mommy Mundo‘s launching event called PLAY, a disease awareness raising campaign at the Playdium at Fun Ranch, Frontera Verde Pasig; along with 24 media moms and their children. PLAY stands for Protection, Love, and Activities for Young kids. It’s about expressing your love for your child in a holistic approach-by providing your child with a happy and healthy environment.

How do you provide a happy environment for your child? By spending quality time with him through enriching and stimulating activities that promotes parent-child bonding. This is what the event taught us moms (and dad- hi, Marc!) through the fun activities they prepared for us. There was a parent and child amazing race/treasure hunt, a word scramble, and a puzzle game, among others.

We also learned that providing a healthy environment for your child also means ensuring his health and wellness. One of the best ways we can do this is by keeping him from harmful diseases, through healthy and sanitary practices. With all the scary diseases out there, it’s inevitable for first time parents to get so paranoid and over-protective. Prevention is always better than cure; and vaccination does just that. Did you know that vaccination is the first line of defense against harmful diseases?

The main topic that was tackled was the dreaded Invasive Pneumococcal Diseases (IPD). IPD are such scary diseases, I tell you! A silent but very deadly pandemic, it is considered as the #1 killer of children under 5 years of age. IPD comes in forms of Meningitis, Sepsis, Bacteremia, Pneumonia, and other common diseases such as Acute Otitis Media (middle ear infection).

The event was so timely as our little man has been getting his Invasive Pneumococcal Vaccine (IPV) shots, and is set to have his 2nd one on March 2. Prior to this, I honestly had but a vague idea of what IPV was for. After learning about the dangers and horrors of this silent killer, I am so glad that we have been getting all his shots right on schedule. Having my child vaccinated on time is a great way to keep him healthy by preventing my child from contacting any of these scary diseases! I can sleep better (if I baby lets me! :P) at night, knowing he is armed and protected.

For years, Mommy Mundo, supported by GlaxoSmithKline, has been an active advocate of vaccination awareness. With the knowledge shared with us at PLAY, we are now more well-informed (and less paranoid!) parents. 🙂

Vaccinations can be very expensive – we have two kids! – but are worth it. Like I always say, prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure.

Gosh, they can get pretty expensive indeed, but definitely worth it. Imagine the horrors of having a sick child…or worse, your child getting hospitalized. 😦
